The Department of Bengali originated in 1961. It is one of the oldest departments of the college. The main objective of the department is to encourage the students to read Bengali literature not only for academic purpose but for pleasure also. The impressive collection on Bengali literature in the college library is a perfect complement to the department. Students are encouraged to participate in seminars organized by the department. The faculty inspires the students to contribute articles written in Bengali for publication in the college magazine. The department takes the initiative for the celebration of the International Language Day in the college on 21st February every year.

The faculty successfully overcomes the challenge of teaching the prescribed syllabus to students who are generally not much interested in the vernacular, at least at the beginning of the academic session. Subsequently, their interest in Bengali literature is aroused very skillfully by the faculty. The department evaluates students through regular class tests, tutorials and selection test.
